Look at the first link Reading and read the information about Silent films. I want you to read the following paragraphs: first paragraph, elements, intertitles and watch video, live music and sound, and finally acting techniques.
We will look at two video clips from this time period "Gold Rush" which grossed 4,250,000 back in 1925. To put this in perspective movie tickets cost .25 cents! A bottle of coke was .25 cents! The average house cost 3,000 and 5,000 dollars.

For fun, here is picture of me and Coley for Halloween. Coley wanted to go as "the kid" a character in the movie "the kid" by charlie Chaplin. This film was one where you had a roller coaster of emotion. If you are interested and time permits look it up on you tube. The little boy is the original fester from Adams Family!
Questions:
1 From the video "Gold Rush" what do you think is going on? What tells you this? Do the actors give you body language or facial expression for what is happening to them?
2. The film "Gold Rush" is a comedy what gives it this type of category? Please explain.
3. The Films both have a narrator instead of speaking. As you read about intertitles what else have silent films used in the past to discuss what is happening in the scenes?
4.How does music and sound effect film? Not only here in the case of the silent films, but think of the films that you watch currently. Sound effects and music can make you up, and feel emotion whether it be sad or happy. Explain what importance these sounds have for films? Please explain in detail 30 to 45 words.
5. The films in the silent era were all black and white how important was it to have good use of body language and facial expression? In your next project you will write and produce a silent film that is 2:30 to 3 minutes long. How important will your use of body language and facial language be? What camera angle techniques will you use to display this?

ReplyDelete1) In the first video it looks like they are eating a shoe and the man with the beard looks disgusted while the other one doesn't really care, he's just hungry.In the second video it looks like the man with the beard is seeing the other one as a chicken because he's hungry. I can tell because of there facial expressions and there body language.
2)Its comedy because they do funny things and its kind of like the three stooges where they dont have to talk a lot to be funny its there facial expressions and its there actions.

In the past they've used objects, actions and facial expressions.Its important for films to have sound because it makes you feel something like in a scary movie, when something pops out it usually makes a big scary sound. or if something funny happens they clap/laugh.
5)It was important to use objects and actions so you know whats going on and facial expressions if they think something funny,scary,odd ect. In the project it will be pretty important to use body language so the people know whats going on and facial expressions to show if we like something or dont. you will have to use medium shot, close up, long shot, extreme closeup, lead room ect.

ReplyDelete1)During the first clip 2 men are eating a shoe because the are hungry. You can tell this because the guy with the beard looks like he'd rather have something also. Yes, the actors give you body language or facial expression.
2)This film is a comedy because they do things that normal living people wouldn't do.
3)IN the past people have used onscreen intertitles, present key dialogue, and comment on action for the cinema audience.
4)The music and sound effects can give emotion which can't all be shown in film alone. I can't think of any films I see today that are silent films or use the tecnicke they use.

ReplyDeleteYour observation is very true. The body language and facial expressions are what make the silent films and current films work. Even in photos you can tell through expressions what people maybe feeling. On question five the camera angles that you would use are extreme close up, close up, medium and long. I would not use lead room it would be too difficult to get the feeling of the body language or facial image. Good work!!! You are almost done you just need to post to a video

ReplyDelete1: The first video the characters are hungry so they decide to eat one of the characters shoes for food. The character with the beard seems satisfied with the meal, as the other person seems disgusted and rather not eat a shoe. The characters facial expressions show disgust and or rrespect for the meal. In the second video the bigger of the two characters thinks the ther person looks like a chickenbecuase he is hungry. You can tell by the way he acks.
2: The Gold Rush can be described as a comedy for many reasons. One of the reasons are that the characters do funny things such as eat shoes or think one and other are chickens. This is how Gold Rush is a comedy.
3: These videos also use facial expressions and actions.
4: Sound effects videos greatly. In different scenes of movies the music changes. Music can make the watcher feel the emotion of the video. Sound and music can make the viewer feel sad, mad, happy etc... Music and sound have a huge effect on videos especially silent films.
5: Facial expressions and actions are very important in silent films. They describe how the actors feelin the video with out color and them speaking. We will need to use many different types of shots for are video to show the expressions of the actors. Some of the shots will be close up, extreme close up, medium shot etc... In our video that we will make it will be very important to use faial expressions and different body actions to make the viewer feel how the actors feel.

ReplyDelete1 they are hungry and ran out of food so they cooked Chaplin's shoe so he is cooking it gives it two more minutes and looks happy but Jim said to hurry up so Chaplin took shoe put on plate then put it on table sat down and looked confused. then he took shoe top off and gave bottom to Jim. Jim looks at it oddly then swaps his with Chaplin's and so he has top both guys look at shoe awkwardly then Chaplin tries his loos happy and starts chowing down looking pleased about his food.
2 it is a comedy because he and his friend are eating his shoe and Chaplin likes eating it
3 i have see a silent film where they held up posters saying what happens.
4 sound and music help with the experience of a movie by showing the emotion even more by setting the general mood or building suspense
right before something scary happens like having scary music then silence then loud screeching monster or alien and that usually scares people alot so times little kids cant watch the movie plus if there is a scene where there are no characters then you kind of need sound or if there if say a space battle on star wars. star wars has to much action and battle scenes that they don't have time to show all that emotion.
5 extremely important because there was no color so expression set the mood and terrible use of expression would ruin the movie.it will mean are grade if we fail in expression and silent films should be filmed by long shot or medium some times even close up

ReplyDelete5) With body motion you can express your feelings with out talking.In our next project that will be 2:30 to 3 minutes long we cant use sound so it will be very important that we use expressions. We could also use different camera angles to show what that character is looking at.
1)This first video they show you what they are doing in the film. They are eating a boot or should i say cooking one then they eat it. The two guys make it seem likes its some kind of meat. They use a knife to cut it up. Then he out water as it is like flavor. When they eat it they don't mind that its a boot.

2. It's comedy because they show one of them as a chicken cause the other one is so hungry going crazy. So then he starts to chase him and all. Plus they try to eat a shoe too!!

The other just eats his shoe and doesn't care.You can tell one man doesnt care because he shruggs his shoulder. The other man is disgusted you can tell by his facial expression. In the second video the chunkier man was really hungry so he was having a hallucination and he imagined him as a chicken. The other man wasn't as hungry but he ran away because the other guy wanted to eat him. They both showed body language and facial expression. This is a comedy because he wants to eat the other guy. In silent films narrators are used to tell whats happening in the story. Sound helps a lot because it sets the mood. most horror films wouldn't be scary without the music. For example jaws. without the scary music it wouldn't be so suspenseful. Same with most horror films. That is why the music is very important. It's also important in happier movies because it makes the characters seem happier. Facial expression and body language is very important because they cannot speak. ReplyDelete- 1. In the first video it looked like the man with the mustache and the guy sitting down were cooking (steaming?) and then eating a shoe.
2. Its a comedy because no one actually eats shoes, or cooks shoes, and its suppose to be hilarious.
3. They could be used to cheer people up, and they can be used to see what the worlds like without sound, and what people may think your doing in the film could be entirely different then what you could really be doing.
4. Music in silent films and films we see till this day can make a difference because it makes the movie seem more epic, and compliments the film. It also makes the movie seem different from other movies and it makes the movies more dramatic.
5. Facial and body movements could actually make a difference in the movies because whatever you do you have to remember you have no sound and that any thing you do could make the person think the movies off track.
